Business Development, Marketing, and Sales
For some people, there is no clear distinction between business development, marketing, and sales. Rather, these distinct disciplines are referred to (and called upon) interchangeably. I prefer to side-step the debate, and focus on the correct discipline where needed, aware that often a situation does indeed call for a mixed approach.

Business Development (BD)
My  understanding of  business development is grounded in the concept that BD is about relationships, customer needs, and easing business “pain” through solutions. BD is not about products and services, it is about people. My experience in BD has helped me to understand that relationship-building comes first. Trust, credibility, and faith, must be present before true business discussions can commence.

The “homework” of BD requires due diligence in identification of market opportunities, gathering information on potential customers and competitors, lead generation, and business model adaptations. It also involves a careful understanding and appreciation of client-facing protocols, identifying client needs, “running the numbers” where possible, and having a handle on information management.

Marketing is about products and services. I have an understanding of the need for building brand awareness of products and services through consistency of brand messaging across all marketing communications and collateral. My marketing expertise is built on:

Graphic Design
What comes as second nature to me – a strong understanding of graphic design software – has served me well in my career. I have over ten years experience in graphic design and production for both online and offline environments. I have recently upgraded to Adobe CS4.
